Billtrust alternatives for invoice delivery, payments and collections

By The AR Agent team · · 6 min read

The main Billtrust alternatives are Versapay, Esker, HighRadius and Kolleno for broad receivables platforms, and Paidnice and The AR Agent for smaller businesses on QuickBooks or Xero. Billtrust is built around getting invoices to buyers and getting paid: invoice delivery across many channels, a buyer payment portal, cash application, credit and collections. The right alternative depends on which of those you need. We make The AR Agent, one of the options below, so weigh what we say about it accordingly.

Every claim about another company here comes from its own website, read on 27 October 2026, and is linked in Sources.

What is Billtrust and who is it for?

Billtrust serves B2B suppliers in industries including distribution, manufacturing, equipment, medical, retail and transportation. Its own pages describe invoice delivery "automatically across every channel" (email, its buyer payment portal, AP portals, Peppol, clearance platforms and print), a branded self-service buyer payment portal, payments across methods, cash application, AI-prioritized collections, and credit approval and monitoring.

It says it integrates with multiple ERPs but does not name them on the pages we read.

Why do businesses look for Billtrust alternatives?

Usually because of fit:

  • You need part of it. A supplier whose invoices already reach buyers, but whose overdue ones go unpaid, may want a collections tool rather than an invoicing and payments platform.
  • Size. A business invoicing a few hundred customers by email has simpler needs than one selling into large buyers through AP portals.
  • Accounting system. On QuickBooks or Xero, look for a tool that names your system.
  • Payments. Some teams want payments inside the AR tool. Others keep their current payment methods and only want follow-up handled.

What are the best Billtrust alternatives?

Versapay

Versapay offers electronic invoicing, a customer portal where buyers pay, view account history and resolve disputes, B2B payments including ACH and cards, AI cash application, and collections. It lists manufacturing, wholesale distribution and professional services.

Best fit: a supplier that wants invoices, payments and customer conversations in one shared portal.

Accounting systems: NetSuite, Sage Intacct and Microsoft Dynamics 365, with other ERPs through open APIs or flat files.

Esker

Esker sells order-to-cash software to "the Office of the CFO." It sends invoices in each customer's preferred format, with e-invoicing compliance in more than 60 countries, plus collections, cash application, credit, deductions and online payments.

Best fit: a larger supplier with e-invoicing obligations in several countries, or several ERPs after acquisitions.

Accounting systems: says it integrates with over 70 ERPs; none named on its home page.

HighRadius

HighRadius covers order-to-cash (collections, cash application, deductions, credit, e-invoicing) alongside payables, payments, close and treasury, for mid-sized and large organizations. See HighRadius alternatives.

Best fit: a finance team that wants receivables and wider finance on one platform.

Accounting systems: 50+ ERPs and systems, with pages for SAP, Oracle, Microsoft Dynamics and NetSuite.

Kolleno

Kolleno covers collections, a payment portal, cash application, disputes, credit risk and forecasting, plus an AP Portal Agent that submits invoices through customers' AP portals, which overlaps with part of Billtrust.

Best fit: a finance team on QuickBooks, Xero or a mid-sized ERP that wants collections and payments together.

Accounting systems: NetSuite, QuickBooks, Microsoft Dynamics, Xero and Sage.

Paidnice

Paidnice sends reminders and scheduled statements, adds late fees that can wait for your approval, runs a payment portal with card, bank transfer and payment plans, and reads replies to draft the next step for a person to approve.

Best fit: a small business that wants reminders and a payment portal on top of its books.

Accounting systems: Xero and QuickBooks.

The AR Agent

The AR Agent covers one part of what Billtrust does: collections follow-up. The AI agent chases overdue invoices by email from the due dates in QuickBooks or Xero, reads and answers replies, tracks promises to pay, and brings disputes and judgement calls to a person.

It does not deliver invoices to AP portals, process payments, run a portal, apply cash or check credit.

Best fit: a small or mid-sized B2B business whose real problem is overdue invoices nobody has time to chase.

Accounting systems: QuickBooks and Xero, with Gmail or Outlook.

How do the Billtrust alternatives compare?

Tool Best fit Invoice delivery Payment portal Accounting systems named on its site
Billtrust B2B suppliers Many channels Yes Not named on pages read
Versapay Suppliers wanting a shared portal Yes Yes NetSuite, Sage Intacct, Dynamics 365
Esker Multi-country suppliers E-invoicing Online payments 70+ ERPs; none named
HighRadius Mid-sized and large teams E-invoicing B2B payments SAP, Oracle, Dynamics, NetSuite
Kolleno Finance teams AP portal submission Yes NetSuite, QuickBooks, Dynamics, Xero, Sage
Paidnice Small businesses Statements Yes Xero, QuickBooks
The AR Agent Small and mid-sized B2B businesses No No QuickBooks, Xero

All seven do some form of collections follow-up.

How do you choose a Billtrust alternative?

Split the job into three parts:

  1. Getting invoices to buyers. If buyers demand AP portals or e-invoicing, Versapay, Esker and Kolleno address parts of it.
  2. Getting paid. If you want customers to pay inside the AR tool, you need a portal. Versapay, Kolleno and Paidnice describe one.
  3. Following up when they don't. Ask every vendor what happens when a customer replies, disputes a line or promises a date. Our guide to invoice disputes explains why that matters.

If only the third part is a problem, a collections tool is the smaller change. Our collections software guide covers what to look for, and Versapay alternatives compares portal-led tools.

Frequently asked questions

What does Billtrust do?

Billtrust's site describes invoice delivery across email, AP portals, e-invoicing networks and print, a buyer payment portal, payments, cash application, AI-prioritized collections, and credit approval and monitoring, for B2B suppliers in industries such as distribution and manufacturing.

Which Billtrust alternative suits small businesses?

For a small business on QuickBooks or Xero, Paidnice and The AR Agent are the narrower options here. Paidnice adds reminders, statements and a payment portal. The AR Agent chases overdue invoices by email and brings judgement calls to a person, without handling payments.

Is there a Billtrust alternative with a customer payment portal?

Yes. Versapay, Kolleno and Paidnice each describe one, and Esker and HighRadius describe online or B2B payments. The AR Agent does not offer a portal or take payments.

Can I use a collections tool alongside my current invoicing?

Usually. A tool that reads due dates from your accounting system works however invoices were sent, and leaves invoicing and payments as they are.

How The AR Agent handles this

The AR Agent handles the follow-up after an invoice is sent. It connects to QuickBooks or Xero and to Gmail or Outlook, and chases overdue invoices by email from the due dates in your books. When a customer replies, it reads what they said. "We'll pay Friday" becomes a tracked promise with a follow-up if it is missed. A missing PO, invoice query or wrong contact is flagged as a blocker. A dispute pauses chasing and comes to a person. Every email and action is kept against the customer and invoice.
