A QuickBooks MCP server lets an AI assistant such as Claude or ChatGPT read from QuickBooks, and sometimes write to it, so you can ask about your books in plain words instead of exporting reports. MCP stands for Model Context Protocol, an open standard for connecting assistants to other software.
There are two kinds. Developer servers expose the QuickBooks API more or less directly and usually run on your own computer. Hosted connectors are built for one job, such as chasing overdue invoices, and you add them to your assistant with a sign-in. This page explains the difference, what to check before you connect either, and how to set one up. Most of it applies to Xero too.
